$ Members of the Otaki Literary and Debating Club spent an evening -with Ireland's national hard, Thomas Moure, ojj -Monday night. There was a splendid attendance of members (Rev. i Petrie, president, in r lk* chair), and an ; enjoyable and proli table evening was . spent. j Mr Thos. Collins read an exhaustive l and carefully prepared paper, giving a biographical sketch of Thomas Moore *s ’ life, with in l©resting details of his . works, which comprised poc’ms, grave and ga 3', pathetic and humorous, his- j lorical hooks, plays, etc. Maorchs melo- j dies were, perhaps, the linest of his i works, and would live for a great many '
.Tears. During the evening a number of short poems fro-in Moore’s works were load by Mass Lee, lie's. I’etrie and Slade, Messrs T. Collins, A. R. Rudkin, ami i'rank l’enn. tSevera! of Moore’s ‘ melodies were also sung and greatly cm- j joyed. Mrs ISwabey sang “I Saw Tliv j k’orm in Youthful Prime”; Miss Kilsbv, “Kieli and Rare Wore the Gem* She Wore” and “The Meeting of llie AVateis”; Miss Evelyno Jones, “Bolievc Mo if All Tliosu Endearing .Charms. ’ ’ A hearty vote of thanks was accorded iu Mr Cultins for his- aide and interesting paper, and to those who hart contributed items.
