OTAKI BRASS BAND.

PROGRESS BEING MADE

A general meeting of members of the Otaki Brass Band was hold at the Druids’ Ilall on Wednesday night, Mr J. D. Howell (vice-president) presiding. In making his opening remarks Mr Howell stated that the public had done well in according the bund support, and suggested that a statement of receipts be published each month. Mr Fielding (secretary) said matters in general had been hurriedly arranged, perhaps there had been laxity, and the move now was to place the band on a sound footing and secure the confidence ol the residents. If mistakes had been made the band was ready to make amends. He moved that Mr Kupu llaweo be elected a vice-president and Mr Whata Haliaraia a life member, both these persons being previously overlooked. The latter, he said, had been one of the prime movers of the organisation. Mr Ayre, in seconding the motion, eulogised both gentlemen, stating that the former was a good sport and always a generous giver, while the latter was also a real white man and a sport. He advised both the Maoris and Pakehas to work together for the common g»od . ol the band, let no differences arise, show respect for their bandmaster, and , work generally in the interests of the i organisation. He asked all to attend j practices and thus earn the support, of the public, work and pay for the instruments, and later be able to appear spick and span in uniforms. After the Chairman had also made complimentary reference the motion was unanimously carried. Mr Fielding asked what action the baud intended to take relative to securing suitable torches, to be used when playing out. Messrs Bills, How oil, Ayre, and Trauter promised to supply necessary lights, while (lie latter said he would see they were in readiness for each occasion. > -Mr Ayre said he had received an invitation from i’araparaumu to give an open-air concert there, while it was ! mentioned to him that it was likely the bund would be engaged for the uext Paraparaumu spore gathering. The Chairman said the eommitteo should arrange terms for playing at tunctions —say, at so much per man, and expenses paid. Tho Otakj Maori Racing Giub had only given ut the rate ot Os 0d per man per day, but, possibly, tho club might yet do something by way of a donation. The secretary said the fee received was certainly very low, and that twenty years ago playe.ru received £1 per <!av. The Chairman said he understood tk» price to be paid by the club w a;* £2d for | two days, while lie and Mr Dustin hid agreed to pay for the luuchca. Utrango to say the lunch charges had been deducted by tho Club. Mr Dustin, ho aid. had no right, to put in his bill to the club.—Decided Jo writo to Mr Dustin on the matter.
