Tantrum, and D. Noble (Otaki) drawing attention to the prevalence of stock oh I the roads at Otaki Railway, and stating the roads were never free of them. j Two horses especially were most objec- f tionablc, and a danger to school club ( dren. It appeared that two or three people had the grazing rights of the road. The Chairman said lie had seen the ranger, who had taught the ollcudcrs and had decided lo summon them. The Singer reported that during the month lie had impounded 1- head of ( slock, chiefly from Otaki and Te floro ridings, five of the offenders would be sued next Court day at Otaki. Kola- ( live to the petition from Otaki ratepayers, lie thought the trouble had , come to an end, as he had seized the ( stock and laid informations. Cr. Ryder said he.had had complaint.'. , relative to stock on Hughes’ line, but j Mr Matson assured that councillor that , the trouble had also ended there. T Or. Coley said he had received several complaints, but knew' Mr Watson had been in hi;; riding, and that stock had been turned out as soon as he had left. The ranger, he said, had done his £ best. t Mr Watson said he had caught the T stock complained off atm secured driv- c mg fees, but later had impounded t them, and this he thought should cause jthe nuisauce to cease. 0 Cr. Whyte said he had heard that the c ranger had impounded one lot of a cattle, and allowed those from a neigh- e Injuring farm to roam at large. t Mr Watson denied this. c Cr. Ltroadbelt said in liis riding there A had been trouble, while Cr. Harkness t said there was one horse m his district i that gave trouble. Thu fault- was not f altogether due to the ranger. t Miscellaneous. 4 Gr. • Harkness asked that Bruce and other roads bo inspected with a view lo improvement, and expressed pleasure dial Florida road was at last to receive attention. lie also drew attention to j the bad state of the hydraulic ram, and | suggested it bo put in dead water. j Gr. Hrondbelf also asked for minor ( improvements He suggested also that j , the Hokio beach road be attended to. j and that adjacent local bodies be asked j It was decided to call for tenders for ; , Ike Kawiu-Foxton road, plans, etc., now I being available. | Gr. Ryder reporting 1 hat lie had finished his portion (he mafter was nut further discussed. The Chairman reported that the Waihaaae beach road was being attended 10. and would soon be finished. Cr. Coley reported that the Gorge roads were going on well, but that soon metal carls would be needed. Recently there had been one bad slip at Devil’s l.lbow. but this had been cleared. lie explained thul in the appointment of a roadman for his riding he had been guided by others and had recommended a nun who had recently been arrested for being a military defaulter. A second man had been put on, and the first had returned, but lie had advised tiic foreman to keep to the second appointee. •Speaking on Pratley’s drain, he said the trouble seemed io be that it was below sea level, and suggested on the arrival of the new engineer he should at once inspect. It was proposed l»v Cr. Monk, seconded by Cr. Ryder, that Cr. Whyte be empowered to have certain work done on the Tokomaru Valley road for I a -uni of W’UO. to be dune subject to terms of contract. It was decided to seal the transfer of i t] ie gravel reserve. AVaitohu. from | I-lema te Ao to the Council, and that | Crs. Harkness and Broadbclt sign the i transfer on the Council’s behalf. Mr Howard waited on the Council and asked for improvement to the Gladstone road. Since he had interviewed the Council he had emploved six men at his own expense, and he could not continue to do so much longer. Any money granted by the Council would be properly spent. He had already spent £SOO on the road out of his own pocket independent of his work. The Chairman said if Mr Howard put in a statement of money expended the Council would no doubt assist by spending £3OO. Mr Howard agreed to do as requested. / Messrs Bartholomew Bros, also waited on the Council and asked for drain improvement at Arawhata. —To be considered. Mr Tubman waited on the Council and asked for drainage improvement at Hokio. and stated it the lake was lowered he would be prepared to give £IOO as an indemnity in case the Natives sued the Council for wrongfully interfering nith the water.
