MAORILANDER IN PORTUGAL.
A New Zealander, who returned on the lonic, was one of the guests of honour at a bullfight in a town in Portugal recently. He says in all his travels he never saw such a eombina tion of cleverness and cruelty as warenacted in the arena, that day. The superb courage of the men. and the cruel torture of the animals surpassed anything he had ever seen. After the bullbaiting had finished, the party were asked to take part in a military tournament that required the most skill ul horsemanship, feats of . daring being performed that are unknown in other countries as being quite unnecessary to make a cavalryman. The colonial speaks with not a little pride that ho was the only one of the visitors who did not come to grief before the events were finished, although he hud to confess that his heart was in his mouth several times. The Portuguese 3re tho most expert horseman he has ever seen. They glory in taking - most foolhardy risks, xhe man who takes risks that are almost uncanny and comes off successfully is looked upon as a national hero, and is acclaimed everywhere.
