j AXvTNUAL REPORT. Die following is the test of the annual report to bo submitted to the adjourned annual meeting of the Horowlienua Horticultural and Industrial society, to be held on Wednesday even- i ing nest, 9th inst.:— lour committee in submitting their report of the society’s work for the l e ‘ ir ending April 110, 1920, congratulate the members on the improvement in the linancial position as compared with the previous year, but are of opinion that the public- should accord the society a larger measure of support, hy becoming members and also by exhibiting at the shows.-. Wc ate much indebted to the teachers of the various 'schools for interesting their scholars in these competitions, which arc no doubt of educational* value lo the children.
AV'c have also to thank Airs Russell, of Wellington, for her kindness in giving demonstrations to the ladies of Otaki in the art of bouquet making and arranging lloral decorations, and also for trophy presented as prize in this class of exhibits. * Patrons have been generous in their donations to the special prize fund and in providing trophies, and our thanks are tendered them for tlie assistance given, lo those ladies who collected lor this 1 untT, and those who so üblv conducted and assisted at the sweets stall and tearooms we oiler our sincere thanks, the lands of the society being largely augmented by their efforts. Air AI. fiiineox kindly donated a sheep and Air A. L. Alinton :i lamp for guessing conipetit ions. *lbo entries tor best kept cottage garden. prizes for which were kindly donated by A!;ijor Addington, were disappointing. viz., live, only three being eligible under the terms of the competition. Air Had field .Knucks carried off first prize with a very nicely laid out and kept garden. By the death of the lute Dr. XV. H. Hufliwaito the society loses one of its oldest and most esteemed .members, a gentleman whose generosity and kindly disposition had won the esteem of every member of the society.
i'nur commit toe regret that owing to i renxo\al of Major Addington from the * district we have lost one of our largest exhibitors, and most generous patrons, one who always took a keen interest in the welfare of the society. A\ e nTso wish to convey to those ladies and gentlemen who have acted as judges our appreciation of their ser- 1 'ices, which we recognise have often , been rendered at inconvenience to t hemselvcs. We Have a! o to than!: Mr IX, Small for the splendid displays which lie has staged, and which added greatly to the attractiveness of the shows and also disseminated much valuable information. I The horticultural evenings held j under the auspices of the society in conjunction with the Bulb Society ! proved very helpful, and we wish to j thank those gentlemen who so ably ; conducted them, and trust that these ! evenings will be continued during the j coining year.
