DAIRY FARMERS’ PROFITS
coMr arison between Recent YEARS. . |
at ti social function held in Palmerston North, at which Mr M. Cohen was entertained, Mr F. J. Nathan quoted some interesting figures showing the profits made by dairy farmers when land was worth i-IU per acre compared with the profits made at the present time with land at £l2O per acre, lie spoke first of Lite years 1912 and 10115, when land was £-10 per acre, and the price paid for butter fat Is per lb. Allowing three acres to run two cows, the cost of land per cow was flio, the interest on which at 6 per cent would be £3 Ids. The return from 200 pounds of butter fat at Is per pound would be £lO, ihe profit, per Cow thus being £G Ss. Taking land al £ldO per acre, and the price pal'l for butter fat ds per pound, aud again allowing three acres to run two cows, the cost of land per cow would be £IBO, or which tho interest at G per cent- was £lO 16s. Two hundred pounds of butter fat at ds per pound would return £do, leaving a profit per cow of £0 -Is. Therefore said Mr Nathan, land at £ldo per acre with butter fat at ds per pound was cheaper than it was eight years ago at £-10 per acre, when butter fat was Is per pound, the farmer’s return now being -13 pe.r cent better. Even supposing it took two acres to run one cow, the extra act- return per cow at the increased price ot kind, with tho increased price for butter fat, would be Ss as against £d His with three cows to two acres.
