A MANAKAU FUNCTION.

(To the Editor.) I Sir, —A function was held last night I at Manakau in aid of the soldiers’ | memorial. There was a very large I gathering, and the evening passed off I wiTh a concert, sale of goods, and a dance. I was always under the imj pression that Manakau was always to ■j the fore with anything got up for a benefit; but on last night’s performJ nnoe she failed badly. With tho concert and dance sho took a leading part. ibut when it came to the sale of goods the leading lights were no where to be found, barring one returned soldier, and he was left to do the bulk. I think the people of Manakau w ere like the .Scotchman —they didn't like going ! outside the saxponec if the article was f worth ton shillings. I hope the next j time a function of this kind is lmld the l people will leave tightness ai home and { tiring generosity with them. I am, | etc.. | ONE WIIO WAS THERE, ft Manakau. 13Mi May. H*2o.
