ERECTION OF WORKERS' DWELLINGS.
The Housing Board has recently considered the que lion of allowing groups of artisan-, in various towns to erect workers' dwellings for themselves. The decision arrived at was that the I Board is prepared to favourably conj sider applications from approved artiI sans, either singly or in groups, who desire to erect their own dwellings. It is desired that the procedure should apply especially to the country towns where the Department has not been able to obtain suitable tenders. In order to assist the applicants as much as possible they may apply to erect dwellings cither on their own plans and specifications, but subject to approval of the housing architect or may adapt the departmental designs and spccilications. In view of the fact that the equity ol etodi purchaser is only £lO, il must 1- understood that the dwellings to be e .vu shall bo such as could be readily sold at any j future date .should any of the occu- I pants fail to comply with their obliga- • lions. 1
When submitting tenders for dwellings, applicants may either undertake to supply all the requisite materials or to tender on the assumption that the Board will consider the purchase and supply to the contractors ol" all or any portion of the materials required. In the former case, the applicants may b» able to purchase locally the materials at a lower price than the Board could, or they may be able to arrange satisfactorily for the supply of material! locally, and if such arrangements are approved by the Hoard the department will be responsible for (he payments. The Board desires in this way to assist applicants in every way possible to proceed with the erection of dwellings at the least cost. It is preferable, of course, that each group of artisans should comprise all the skilled tradesmen necessary for the erection of the proposed dwelling complete.
The conditions contain-d in our contracts would, of course, apply to all contracts In! under this scheme, subject to any necessary modifications.
