LIGHTENING THEIR POCKETS.
The substitution «f aluminium f>o pfennig coins in place of silver by the German Government is probably due to the fact that, owing to the big rise in the price of silver, coins of that metal are now worth practically their face value, says the “Daily Chronicle.’’ But aluminium coins will materially lessen the burden ox carrying small change in one’s pocket. The lightest of till metals, the specific gravity of aluminium is less than onefourth tiiat of silver. Shortly before the war it: was proposed to use aluminium for “paper” money, and so reduce tthe risk of loss by fraud and fire, as ■well as" preventing the spread of disease. Bui though .-beets of the metal only 0.00 tin thick were successfully manufactured, it was not found practicable to print cut them, and the proposal was abandoned.
