BUYING UP BOOTS.
ft is reported that in some cases the price of various lines of footwear has already increased, though there is hardly time for the higher value hides
bought, at the last sales to have been put into the tanning pits, much less taken out and made into boots. The rise, however, does not appear to be
general, and one excuse for it is that bootmakers have to put some"--cheek upon the buying which has taken place lately. Nomehow there seems to be something wrong with this excuse — boots are not articles than can be bought for years ahead and hoarded by the average person. In any ease the solicitousness for the general public
good comes rather suddenly. There has certainly been a run on standardised boots, the price of which remain. l the same in the meantime, but that iorobably accounted for by the fact that I lie boots have only been for sale a week or two, and the public is realising that the prices are good—too good to last, ia fact.—Exchange.
