LAND AGENTS’ LICENSES.
PROTECTING THE PUBLIC. The issue of land agents’ licenses, said Mr Burton, S.M., at Te Kuiti recently, would in future be more carefully scrutinised by himself. In addition to having certificates of good character, ho thought a magistrate should be satisfied that applicants should have a knowledge of bookkeexi- j big, and be able to keep trust accounts. In future an applicant for renewal of j his license would have to produce a ] certificate from a qualified accountant showing that applicant's books were properly kept, and must bring the books to the court so that the bench could see fliat. cheques on trust account were not paid into general account. Owing to flic boom in land and property new businesses were springing up .like mushrooms. People rushed in who had failed at all other careers, j who had nothing to lose and every- f thing to gain, and who, if they made ] a slip, could fold up their tents, like j Arabs, and silently steal away. The I public should be protected, and it was II the duty of the Court to take prccau- t tious such as he bad suggested.
