FROM THE FIELDS OF FRANCE.

It seems still an unsettled question ’whether the'French poppy, seeds of which, picked from the graves of Jiew . Zealand soldiers in France, have been sent to the Christchurch Domains Board by Miss Ettie Rout is not a noxious weed. At the Board meeting i on Tuesday Mr A. D. Ford, who has just returned from Australia, said that the opinion there was that this was a particularly noxious weed. Mr James l.oung. curator of the Christchurch Gardens, stated, on the other hand, that the poppy was very easy to get rid of. and that the most eminent authority in Australia said that there was nothing against it. The chairman (Mr H. .T. Beswtck) reminded members that this poppy was already in Mew Zealand. It was Miss Kout’s wish that some of the seed, and more from the first harvest of the board’s sowing, should be distributed to those relatives of soldiers desiring it. The Board decided to leave the question of further distribution with i the garden committee.
