DUTY FREE MACHINERY FOR LOCAL BODIES.
Should all plant and machinery im- i ported by local bodies for road-making' work, etc, be admitted to the Dominion free of Customs duty'.' In the opinion of the Kiwitea County Council it should. At a recent meeting of the Council Cr. Gower brought up the matter on the following motion: "That this Council urge upon the Government the desirableness of having the import duty removed from imported dump trucks imported by any local body for the purposo of road-making or road maintenance; and that the clerk be authorised to write neighbouring countless asking them to appeal under similar conditions." Cr. Gower said he had been informed in Taranaki that this duty would add £2OO to the total cost of these trucks. The chairman, in supporting the proposal, said these picscs of plant and machinery for roadwork were a benefit to the whole community, and not only to the ratepayers, and he thought it was fair there should Ik- no duty imposed. The motion, which was seconded by Cr. Lewis, was agreed to.
