"All my experience in the Old Countrj - and in America,” said Dr. Trubv King to sl Christchurch pressman, " has simply gone to confirm and accentuate the New- Zealand position with regard to the welfare of women »nr| children, and its relationship to national fitness and prosperity. I .am more than ever impressed with the paramount need of recognising that mother . and child shonld fee inseparable that they ! should be regarded p% an indivisible I unit —during the first year or a o of the, child ’s life. The worst thing That could happen to any nation is the abandonment of home life in order that married women may earn iheir living in industrial ami other pursuits at the time when the first requirements of the child are not only that it should j be fed with breast milk, but that it] should be at the mother's; own breast. It is hoc only the duty, but it is the privilege of the mother, as essential for herself as for -the child, that this natural relationship should be retained. Any other "coarse is the broad road to economic inefficiency and the injury and decadence of tic race, not only from tie bodily point of view, bat. from tie mental and moral standpoint.” _ .
