PROSPEROUS IRELAND.
AS REVEALED BY BANK RETURNS.
The general prosperity of Ireland was reflected in the half-yearly reports of several leading Irish banks, as at ooth June last. These reports showed that a considerable portion of the Irish banking rubli,- voniiiiiK's 1„ k-. H-p a proportion of their wealth on <lcTiOxit in tin- bunks, uotu ith.-tnmling that the deposit interest ratv in Ireland is only 2A pvr .•••nr. It would. no doubt, be much better for the country if a larger portion of these deposits were used for the development of industries, and the fact that they are not so used is not the fault of the banks, which are naturally anxious to lend money, where it is possible, and secure the larger overdraft rates. What is wanted in many parts of Ireland is more courage and enterprise in the conduct of business, and a greater desire for advancement and expansion, observes ‘ * The Times, * ? This, as in a— business, cannot Tie achieved without risk, but without a certain amount of risk and a spirit of confidence there can be no satisfactory business developments. In the North of Ireland business enterprise and confidence is more marked, and there are at present a whole series of new developments and expansions and transfers of property in process of being carried through.
