THE DAIRY FARM.
THREE QUESTIONS ASKED.
A subscriber who is not familiar with factory dairy work, from the producer's point of view, lias submit" fed three questions to us. They are: 1. Wliat is a fair price for winter milk at present prices .for artificial feed, and bearing in mind the present price of cheese for export?
A what’s the highest amount eurnable per cow at present prices for cheese?
what is the maximum amount per acre that a dairy farmer ought to gross with the present laud values?
'i'u the lirst question we may say,-as we may of the others, it all depends on the farmer. To the man who has no hotter idea of winter feeding beyond sttilling rile cows with green oats, we are of opinion that no amount of money will recompense him for what he takes out of the cons on such a stavatioa .hot. The -Milk Commission that was recently set up in ihiglund is veering between 2s <id per gallon and t?s 7A<i for the coming winter months. I’roiint.lv the 2s (id basis will be adopted. That equals iud per quart, a high price ueeiirding lo our standards. In Nett Zealand, with feed stuffs at the present values, we. would say that Is ltd would Ire a.fair price. .In replv lo tiie second question, the highest .price j.,.r cow that we have any. knowledge of is £.'i.'i. This was achieved 11v a supplier t () the Glaxo factory at Itimnythorpe last season at 2s ltd pier pound fur butter-far. In reply to the third question, the highest record wo know of per acre is
I. sit Is per pound for butter-fat. At
present buitei-fat values tins amount would be just doubled. That would make the amount per acre £2*2. But it is only fair to say that the man who bd this was 4 ' some ’ ’ farmer. He did -ml worry bis head about (lie other tellow. lie adopted Carnegie's motto. ■•Tut all yout eggs in one basket and wairli ihe basket.” Tins old gentle-
man recognised {hat his profits were in his litile farm, so he just watched'that. If any of our readers have better results ihan these, we shall be glad to have them, and we are willing to pay £1 as a prize for the highest return duly attested and vouched for liy the farmer's factory secretary. Here is an easy pound for some boy or girl to win. We want returns from any one who has made more than £22 per acre for one season's milking, or whose gross returns lmve exceeded £•'>■“> per cow.— ‘•New Zealand Dairy-man.”
