COUNTY CHAIRMAN.
CE. MONK EE-ELECTED. At the statutory meeting of the Horowhcnua County Council held on Saturday Cr. Monk, proposod by Cr. McLeavey, seconded by Cr. Broadbclt, was nominated for the position of chairman, and as there were no other nominations he was declared unanimously elected. Cr. Monk thanked councillors for the unanimous way in which they had elected him, and added that the term would bo liis fifth successive one—a record any man might feel proud of. lie had always received cordial support, and this alone was gratifying, and while stating he had made mistakes, said he had always done his best. He had taken an interest in the county as a whole, and would continue to do so. but he felt at the same time there were other councillors who were entitled to fill this position; ho appreciated tlicir action in standing aside. He did not believe in chairmen cccuping long terms—such was not in the best interests of local bodies. Councillors, in congratulating Co. Monk on his appointment, said they had the utmost confidence in him, considered him a man of ability and tact, and possessing qualities that were necessary to the position.
