THE OTAKI ELECTION.

(Published by Arrangement.)

(To the Editor.) .Sir,—As a returned soldier who enlisted in the earlier stages of the war and served until the conclusion of hostilities, I have taken a considerable interest in the candidature of Mr J. -McKenzie for tho Otaki seat. Mr McKenzie’s election advertisement states that he fought for us in France and that ho I will light for us at home. The infer- j ence that must necessarily be drawn | from this is that Mr McKenzie ap- | proves of tho parts taken by New Zen- j landers in the Great War, and also ap- j proves of the principles for which the j Empire fought. He would not other- j wise have mentioned the matter in his l advertisement, or claimed any credit for the part he has taken in tho conflict. It might therefore be reasonably assumed that Mr McKenzie enlisted at , tho outbreak of hostilities, and I think that under the circumstances, and in viow of the credit that Mr McKenzie and Mr McKenzie’s supporters are ! seeking to take on this score, it would bo only right and proper for Mr McKenzie to publish his military record. I would therefore ask if-. McKenzie to take the electors into his confidence by answering the following questions:— 7. Did Mr McKenzie enlist or was he drawn in a ballot? 2. If Mr McKenzie was drawn in a ballot, did he appeal?’ If he appealed, on what grounds did he appeal, and was his appeal dismissed! There arc legitimate grounds for appeal, such as family ties, and Mr McKenzie will, of course, j have no objection to stating the grounds to the electors if he did make 1 them to the Appeal Board, j 3. Did Mr McKenzie take the oath of allegiance on going into camp that is required by the Defence Act' j 4. Will Mr McKenzie publish the conI tents of his file for the information of I the electors whose suffrages he is seekI iug? o. Would Mr McKenzie be prepared j to serve the Empire as a soldier on any I future occasion should New Zealand require his services?—Yours, etc.. ! RETURNED SOLDIER.
