THE OPPOSING CANDIDATES.
n To the Editor. Sir, —Under above heading in your issue o£ 17th rust. you slate:—“Mr Field explained that Mr Macdonald had written to him suggesting that ho allow bin name to go before the Farmer!’ Union together with Mr Macdonald’* for selection of a Union representative.Mr Field, I believe, made & similar statement at other places (Hutt). At first I thought it was * mere slip.of the tongue, or even a wUreport, bnt his repetition drives jd» from this indulgence of hint. I muri now contradict hi* statement as published. I was not even mentioned as a “probable candidate" at the time of my wire to Mr Field. An explanatira covering this was 'given at my fir*t meeting (at Levin), when I was asked, “Is it a fact that you approached tfc* Labour Party for nominationf '* and I -replied, “No, it is a fabrication.” Nevertheless this question was repeated at Paekakariki, and to avoid a falst position I made a full statement of tt* faets, it being already known that I had acted for another prospective candidate. Then meekly Mr Field offer! corroboration to toy opponents with * statement. To confirm this I beg to enclose for your perusal copy of mj; wire to Mr Field and his reply, i-v-bicb you will sec that ay name was not suggested as a candidate. My only communication to Mr Field was this telegram:—“ Will you agree farmer* * conference select candidate Otaki cosMituency?" (signed Evelyn. Macdonald, for committee). Kepi/'“Afraid cannot accede proposal; ey candidature as sitting . member loti been announced. Consistently sup ported farmers ’ interest* and spared no pains secure complete unity. Traft now no vote splitting to spoil result*.'* Hr Field’s indiseretiau* are likely t# - spoil, his result* more effectively this anything his opponent* . could doThanking you, Sir, your*, etc.. EVELiN MACDONALD-
