OROUA COUNTY FINANCE.
Ratepayers of tho Oroua County will be pleased to have the assurance of the chairman of their council that their county is in a very satisfactory position financially. That is, when the rates are paid up. Last year the general rates levied aggregated £5326, and by the end of .October the sum of £lslO was still outstanding. This year the levy was £SI47, and there is still the sum of £3050 outstanding! Cr. Burrell is not downhearted about this, for it appears that ratepayers have not been kept informed they are fast approaching the It) per cent impost for delayed payment of rates. When the rates come ir. the Council will face 1920 with a better financial balance by hundreds of pounds than it started the 1919 period with. “A healthy condition,” said the chairman. The future was rendered lighter still by the fact that their sinking funds would relieve them of £20,000 worth of loans during the next eight rears. “Ob, but we’ll have more leans.” groaned u lugubrious member. “Not unless we go in for concrete roads!” retorted another. “And even then there would be the effect of less maintenance for good roads,’" added the chairman. The Council is presently to consider {he question of better roadmaking.
