The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council will be held at Wellington to-morrow.
j Tenders close on Wednesday for the erection of a fire station at Levin. Particulars advertised. The social to be accorded Druids who have returned from the front, on Wednesday night, should be well attended. A pleasant time is assured those who ure present. Present-day prices of hosiery arc very high in most cases, but the ladies of this district will learn with pleasure of the value offered by Stiles and Matheson, Ltd., in spun silk hose. Mr T. A. King has just opened up a choice lot of Christmas cards, music books, new books, etc., for the Christmas trade. He has a splendid assortment, and the prices are moderate. Inttnding customers should call early. Trout are reported to be fairly plentiful in tho Otaki river, and anglers have had good sport. Mr F. Searnncke, who is visiting Otaki, canght eight fine fish on Saturday last, the largest being a six-potmder, and all the others being good-sized fish in good condition. Petty thieving still continues to be carried on in the gardens of Otaki, and | at the railway thefts of a most glaring ! character are being daily committed. j Gardens are entered in broad daylight and cabbages, cauliflowers, and even potatoes moved in a wholesale manner. Probably the finest lambs that have been exhibited in Levin this season were displayed in Mr Lemmon's shop on Saturday, when Eve, reared by Mr F. J. Eyder on his Ohau property, were, freely admired. They averaged no less than 411 b, while one turned the scale at 441 b. All were well grown, solid, and a fine sample of the district'3 prodnction.
At a largely attended meeting of shopkeepers, held at 'Wellington, it was unanimously resolved that all "Welling, ton retail shops should close for the ' whole day on the Saturday after Christmas and New Year's Days, thus giving workers on both occasions f oar consecutive days' holiday. The Kairanga County Council is now paying its permanent roadmen 13s per day, if working within a three-miles radius; if working beyond that radius, 14s per day. The men's time travelling to and from work does not eount in their day's work.
Attention is called to an advertisement inserted in this issue, by the Chief Electoral Officer, setting forth clearly the only persons who are entitled to vote by declaration. Particulars regarding the of absent voters' permits arc also advertised. The general public should make themselves conversant with these matters.
Out of five entries at the Manawatu A. and P. Association's Show Mr R. D. Harkn'esK, of Te Horo, secured two first prizes, a third, and a h.e. His stock was all high-class, while in each department he met with very keen competittion. Mr Harknes* leaves shortly to .-judge dairy classes at the Nelson show, to be held on 25th and 26th inst, The transport Paparoa, with 220 men of all ranks, 160 wive 3 and S 3 children, arrived in Wellington on Friday. Tho health of all on boird was good. During the trip an outbreak of chicken pox and measles occurred, but there were no serious cases. Complaints were made by the men regarding thS nc*emmodation provided for the wives. They also, complained that there was no ship's_ surgeon on board. A trial express, carrying passengers left Wellington/for last night. It was to stop only at Pafcnerston North, Marton, Taihape, Ofiakune, Taumaronni and Frankton. It is being run as a trial to seo in whaTl time the journey can reasonably .be rnn,,with a view to making such an express permanent. The General Manager, Mr R. W. McVilly, and "several of the leading railway officials are travelling with the express.
The Horowhenua County Council gives notice of its intention to declare goats' rue a noxious weed. At Saturday's meeting of the Council formal steps were taken with this object in view, and the resolution will be confirmed at next, Council meeting. Speaking at Saturday's meeting, Cr. Ryder said the weed was spreading rapidly through being carried with metal from river beds. Cr. Whyte said tho weed was very prevalent near Palmerston.
The entertainment to be held at Paraparamu on Saturday next, ISth inst.. should draw a great crowd, seeing that the entire programme is to bo provided by the Wellington Orphans' Club, and the performers comprise some of the leading vocalists and musicians in the city. The concert will be followed by a dance. ,The proceeds will be devoted to the Paraparaumu Tennis Club, in order to make much-needed improvements to the courts. For particulars see advertisement.
