KAPITI ISLAND.
A clause in the "Washing-up" Bill authorising the acquisition of tho remaining Native lands on Knpiii Island was struck out by the Native Affairs Committee. Mr W. H. Field (Olaki) asked in tho House if the -Minister proposed to substitute anything for it. Tin' Minister (Hoi'. 1). 11. Guthrie) said he understood that Mr I'ield or some other member would move to reinstate the clause. When other clauses had been dealt with Mr 11. G. F.l! (Christchurch South) moved to reinstate the clause. The lion. A. T. X«ata (Eastern Maori) raised a point of order that the clause was an appropriation providing for the acquisition of about. 640 acres at a cost of £SOOO or £6OOO. Further, it. related solely to Maoris and had not been translated. Tbe Hon. 1). 11. Guthrie said if had been referred to the Native. Affair-! Committee. Mr Ngata: "Which struck it out." Mr Field said that the land was held by two white trustees in trust for the half-caste owner. The Chairman of Committees (i>J.r Malcolm) upheld the. point of order regarding translation, u- Hie clause referred only to Native owners—" Poet."
