DAYLIGHT SAVING.
The doom of daylight, saving in the United States, inaugurated as a war , measure, was pronounced on June ISth | by Congress. Both Senate and House : of Representatives adopted by overwhelming votes measures to terminate J the operation of the law when the j period of summer-time ends on October I 2fith. I The House, after a three-hour debate, I>V a vote of 233 to 132, passed a Bill to repeal the law on the last Sunday in next October, but rejected an amendment to make the repeal effective • at once. J The Senate, by a. vote of (ill to fin J after brief discussions, added a rider to J , the Agricultural Appropriation Bill * j providing for repeal of the daylight | I measure on the same date as fixed by ; the House Bill. ! The Senate measure, says a Wash- | ington report, now goes to conference I with the Agricultural Bill, and the r 1 House Bill is to be seut to the Senate. It is considered likely that the Senate •amendments will be finally substituted for the House measure. The action of Congress therefore means the continuation of the present clock time this summer and early autumn, with a return to sun time on October 2fitli, ending two years’ operation of the daylight saving plan. Members of both the Senate and the House, iu. advocating the repeal of the law enacted on March 19th, 191 S, said they were guided largely by the wishes ■ of farmers and labouring men who op"pusc the advanced working hours during the spring and summer season. Opponents of the repeal legislation declared that the exra hour of daylight was a boon to city dwellers, and asserted that others could easily adjust their' affairs to conform to the advanced dock schedule. It has since been reported that the repeal has been vetoed by the President. &
