MOPPING UP THE HEIFERS.
A correspondent writes to the “Dannevirke News” as follows: Large buyers have been sweeping liawkc’s Bay during the last fortnight, and have bought and are buying every decent fifteen months old dairy heiler they can lay hands on. Jerseys, and anything showing Jersey blood, fetch very high prices in the paddock, with Holsteins next in demand. The cattle arc being sent right away north, and when .the local buyers, who usually operate in November and December, look round they will find the Hawke’s Bay heifer market is in much the same posiiion as Mother Hubbard’s dog found the cupboard. Considering the number of cows which have died during the winter and spring, following last summer’s nought, and the few - dairy heil'ers which were bred during the litst two years when beef was king, there is every prospect of dairy stock fetching phenomenal prices next year. Local stock people consider £2O to £4O per head will be quite common figures at dairv sales next winter and spring.
