ENEMY ALIENS & GOODS.

RETURNED SOLDIERS’ RESOLUTIONS. i Resolutions were passed by the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Asocialion, dealing with late enemy aliens and goods. / Mr A. B. Sicvwright moved the Wellington remit: “That legislation against unnaturalised Germans be passed by Parliament.” He thought unnaturalised Germans particularly should be prevented from holding land in this country. * Mr T. Long (Auckland) urged the conference to support the action of the Auckland Association in opposing the reappointment of Professor von Zedlitz to the Victoria College. The motion was carried with the addition of the words “and late enemy aliens.” Mr. Sicvwright also moved the Wellington remit: “That the Customs tariff be so altered as to practically exclude alien enemy goods.” He said the proposal was a business proposition and they should support it. Mr E. .F. Andrews (Auckland) seconded. After discussion the mover added the words, “whether/ directly or indirectly from late enemy countries.” Mr W. E. Leadley (Christchurch) pointed out that Germany had to pay a huge war indemnity, and that if all the allied countries adopted the policy advocated, then Germany would only be able to trade with her late allies, and thus would be unable to fulfil her treaty obligations. He supported preferential trade for British goods. Another speaker said the only way Germany could pay was in goods, and they must accept them. Mr V. Potter (Auckland) thought the remit a good one if viewed in the light of applying preference for British goods. The remit was earried.
