INCREASE'IN CONSUMPTION. A considerable increase, compared with previous years, in the importation of tea, is shown by the' annual Parliamentarv return of articles in common use. The total for-I'JIS was 9,403,207 lbs, which is equivalent to S.ltilbs per head of the population. The record is 9,936,6171b5, or 8.721bs per head. The latter, however, yielded only £794 in duty, whereas last year the Customs; collected £129,145 in duty on tea, this being equal to is per head. The consumption of sugar, which is still free of duty, v.urs. 105,565,4321b5, or 94.21bs per head, compared" with 121.21bs per head in 1917. With the exception of 1914, when only 951bs per '.head was imported, the Dominion has used over l'OOlbs, per head for many years, and never since" 1898 has the ; "consumption been so low as it was last year. The greater consumption of tea has been accompanied.by an all-round reduction in the consumption, of spirits, wines, ales, and beers. '
