FORTY YEARS AGO.

(From the -‘-“Hanawatu Herald,” September Sold. 1579.) Wanganui-Foxton Railway. The receipts on the local lino for the four weeks ending July 26th were as follow: —Passengers, £1220 9s 4d; goods and live stock, £l2Ol 17s lid; total, £2422 7s 3d. There were 140 tons less of timber sent along the line than during the same month of the previous year, whilst the firewood trade has increased by 7SS tons. We also notice that the returns show 324 tons of grain as having gone over the line, as against only So during the same month of last year. We are unable to state the receipts at the Foxton railway wharf, as the Government have ceased to publish them, the wharf revenue being treated simply as part of the receipts of the railway.
