SOLDIERS' GRATUITIES.
ALL-NIGHT SITTING OF PARLIAMENT. The House of Eepresentatives considered the soldiers' gratuities on Wednesday night, when Sir Joseph Ward moved to refer the proposal back to the Government for further consideration. In doing so, he criticised the proposals in detail, and advocated an increase of the grant to 2s per day. The debate which followed was mainly on party lines though all members agreed that it should not be so. It was marked by one or two rather acrimonious patches; but, on the. whole, wa3 bright and good-humoured. At 2.5 a.m. a division on the amendment was defeated by 37 to 30. Mr McCombs immediately rose to propose 4s, and to extend the period of payment. This was defeated by 37 to 5. A weary House prepared to pack up its bods to go home; but Sir James Allen rose at 4 a.m., and made a vigorous reply to criticism. As he accused Sir Joseph Ward, in effect, of not having assisted to avoid a party dispute, the Leader of the Opposition had to reply. The most welcome speech was that of Mr Speaker:" "That this paper do lie on the tablo and be printed." Tho House agreed—at 5 a.m.—"Post."
