Tho whitebait season promises to be late as far as Otaki is concerned, and up to the present only small catches have been made. The small catches made have been selling as high as 3s per pint.
The annual general meeting of the Otaki Tennis Club takes place to-raor-row night, when it is hoped all players and enthusiasts will make a point of attending. The business will be to receive the report and balance-sheet, elect officers, and transact general business.
Once again Stiles and Mathcson are offering a 10 per cent discount to Otaki ladies on stock sale day. This means the return fare to Levin paid. All ladies should read the advertisement of this "big value mail order hous*" in the paper.
We remind all interested in the meeting relative to the formation of a branch o*» the Labour Party i" Otaki. which tabes place on Thursday evening next. Mr J. McKcnzie. the Labour candidate for the seat, will be present, and a large gathering is expected.
It is understood that at least three local citizens are to be created ju-tices of the peace., in response to a request by the member for the district (Mr W. H. Field). We may mention that Mr Field made representations on this matter some considerable time ago. while the "Mail" drew attention to the urgent need for more local justices. Mr A. W. Peruse, proprietor of the "Pastoralists' Review," writing from London, says:""The position of meat just now here is peculiar. By July there will be enough purely British meat to feed the whole of Great Britain for three month--, anil frozen meat, won't be wanted. The stores arc nonfull of meat, and ships are arriving rapidly from all part- of the world with more'.' The British Government dare not liberate meat because they have pledged the British farmer a certain price till the end of September.'-"
While motoring through from Lov r Hutt to Otaki this 'morning, in ord< r to exhibit at the Otaki Bulb Show, Mr T. Waugh, the well-known nurseryman, had a nasty accident. -Just befers reaching the summit of the Paeka/ .- riki Hill, on the Horokiwi -side, lis wheel skidded in the soft earth, with the result that one of the back wheels s-truek a post, and the ear was capsized. Fortunately Mr Waugh, who was driving, and Miss Waugh, who accompanied him. escaped unhurt. The ear was' rather badly knocked abeut. With the assistance of a passing motor lorry and helpers Mr Waugh managed to get the car back to the road. Mr" Row's car was despatched from Otaki to fetch Mr Waugh and his exhibits to the show, and they arrived here shortly after midday. All over the Dominion parents are heard complaining of the cost of dressing their children, and this applies especially- to boots and *hoes. It is really hard to find boots for boys that will stand the hard wear the youngsters •jive their clothes. Much interest is beiig taken in the children's evening, to be held on. Fidday night next in connection with the Otaki Literary and Debating Club. Wc have been asked to state that,
owing to the numerous entries that arc coining to hand, the competitions will commence at 7 p.m. sharp.
In our last issue we stated in our news columns in error that the Vr.AV.C.A. social evening to be held at Manakau was on Wednesday evening. It should have been Thursday (tomorrow) night, as advertised: A pleasant evening is promised all who attend to-morrow night.

A special meeting of the Horowhcmia Racing Club was held on Saturday evening for the purpose of appointing a Finance Adjustment Committee to act in conjunction with the A. and P. Association representative's in connection with the purchase of the racecourse. Mr" J. McLcavcy presided and the following motion was adopted: That a Standing Committee be set up, consisting of Messrs J. W. Procter, W. Ryder and C. Blcnkhoru, to be called the Finance Adjustment Committee to act in conjunction with a similar committee to be sot up by, the- A. and I'. Association for the purpose of facilitating and settling all financial matters arising out of the recent purchase of the showground by the two bodies, including the letting or leasing of the ground or any part or parts thereof, and also to act in and adjust any and all matters- affecting the several rights of this club and the A. and P. Association in the grounds, including the settling of the share.or interest of the A. and P. Association in Ihe same, and also to act in conjunction with the committee ol" the A. and P. Association in all matters in which the two bodies ami the debenture holders are concerned and where necessary to obtain the sea! of the club to any document."
