STORMY WEATHER.
Exceptionally heavy galea were experienced in many parts on Wednesday night. As usual, the Otaki district escaped wonderfully well, the gale only smashing a few branches of tree? and doing practically no damage.
At Levin much damage was done Mr R. H. Billens' residence was damaged to the extent of fully £IOO. The verandah and front roof were loosened. and whirled bodily over the trec-topti and deposited hundreds, of yard* away. One of the verandah posts smashed through a bedroom window, and came into contact with an unoccupied bed. At Wcraroa the 40ft long verandah fronting Messrs Bevis and Lawrie'* shops were carried over the tops of the shops and deposited in the adjoining sections, the telegraph wires being badly damaged en route. A large shop window at Weraroa was blown in, and minor damage was done in all directions, hundreds of trees being levelled. In Foxton and district the gale was accompanied with a very heavy rai/s----fall. which lasted all night. Thisj Mawiwalu river was in high flood yesterday. Disastrous floods have occurred in the Marlborough district. In Kaikoura »is inches of rain fell in the 24 hours prior to last night.
