A British warship has put to flight Turkish officers aboard the Goeben, j who were attempting lo scuttle the vessel in the Sea of Marmora. Madrid, August 10. ; Lerroux, leader oi' the Uadicals, has proposed in the Chamber the raising of live millions pexlas, in order to make loans to Prance, Germany, and Austria. Paris, August 10. "Le Petit Parisien" states that the population of Frauec before the war was 38,000,000. It is now :;],000,000. London, August 9.
The "Star" says the syndicalists had hoped to use the police strike as a jumping-off ground for :i general strike. The Home Office's handling of the affair and public disapproval has helped to cripple the revolutionary wing of Labour. The Yorkshire miners have expended .nearly £250,000 in strike pay. Acute distress prevails in many mining districts and arrangements are being made for the feeding of children.
Concerning the Triple Alliance ballot, Sir K. S. Home, when interviewed, stated that "direct action" means the end of demociacy, empowering a recalcitrant minority to enforce decisions upon the majority. Force, aided by terrorism and blackmail, will become the onlv instrument of government.
Mr T. dynes, a member of the. House of Commons, said that "direct action" proposes to reverse Labour's political endeavours, substituting disoi'dcr and violence, and would destroy democratic effort.
Mr Sexton, a member of the nouse of Commons, stated that "direct action" not only was mistaken and foolish, but. was criminal, and would result in civil war.
