TOLL-GATES.
I The new proposal of the Taranaki ! Countv Council to raise revenue bv ! means of toll-gates instead of by the licensing of vehicles appears likely to create a more definite cleavage between town, and country than the original proposal. Meetings of rateiu the rural districts lather favour the toll-gate alternative; and at a meeting of the Okalo dairy fac- : tore, which discussed the matter, ratepayers strongly approved the action of the comity- ii: endeavouring to raise revenue directly- from the users ot the roads, whether by means of licenses or lolls. Indeed, the meeting went further, and resolved that if the. county did not take action the proposed loan for the construction of tar-scalcd roads ’ would not be given a hearing. On tho other hand the Borough Council has unanimously resolved: “That the iara- ! naki County Council lie informed that > the Council is of opinion that the estah- ' lishmcnt of toll-gates on the roads ! leadin'* to New Plymouth would be : even more detrimental to New I’ly- ' mouth than the enforcing of the ; vehicle licensing by-laws. and. under , ilie circumstances, cannot see its way i to agree to the e/tablishmcnt of toilet e* ’ ’—‘ ‘ Havvcra Star. ’ ’
