It. has been announced that Mr Ell, the sitting member for Christchurch South, had definitely decided to contest the Lyttelton seat. Miss Jeffery, who is leaving To Horo, is to be entertained by the To Horo school children this afternoon, and made the recipient of a presentation. Mr William Candy, a grocer and borough councillor, has been selected as the Labour Party's candidate for the Mnstorton scat at the general election. Miss Marion McHnrdie, of the Groytown Hospital (late of Otaki), was successful in securing a first-class pass in the estate nurses’ examinations held
in June last. Mr K. B. Ross states that he will contest the Puhiutua seat. He has previously represented that; electorate. There are likely to be other candidates. Mr George Hunter will contest the Wai-
pawa seat. Many friends in this district will regret to hear that Air W. G. Simpson, of Woodville, lias bec-n very seriously ill with congestion of the lungs and pneumonia. He is now pronounced out of danger, and liis speedy recovery is hoped for. There was a very large gathering at Paraparaumu on Wednesday evening, to bid farewell to Mr K. T. Yataghan, who is leaving Parap'iraurnti, after 14 years as headma <<-r of the school there. Oar report of the function will appear in our next issue.
Stir James Allen states that he had been advised that Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward would arrive in Auckland on Monday next. No Ministers would go to Auckland, because all would be busy in Wellington. .Sir James Allen thought it probable that Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward would leave Auckland by the Pateena on Tuesday, arriving in Wellington on Wednesday.
A big draft of 1093 New Zealand soldiers from Egypt is due to arrive at Auckland on August oth (Wednesday next). Among the number are Hergt. Pat. Ferguson and Private B. Flutey, both of Otaki. Both these soldiers have had a very lengthy service in Egypt, and will be cordially welcomed home by their many friends. Private* G. L. HomanfOhau). H. G. Nieholl- and ; M. X. White (Levin) are returning by the same boat.
Miss Ethel Sheppard (sister to Me*-, dames A. Fur-e, Liddieoat and Y. Askew) was married quietly, at Christ- 1 church yesterday, to Lieut. W, Osborn, * of Timaru, who recently returned to i New Zealand after a very lengthy record of active service. Lieut, Osborn is an expert musician, and was bandmaster of the leading New Zealand military band with our boy* at the front for a very long time. Miss Sheppard resided for some year* in Otaki. and her many friend* here will wish J her all hsppin e-h and prosperity. *
