Mr F. T. Wilton (manager of the Otaki Dairy Company) left to-day oa. a motor tour of the Wnirarnpa, in connection with his company's business for the coming dairying season.
Mrs Kearney, of Gisborno district, who has been an inmate of the Otaki Hospital for some time past, died at that institution early yesterday morning. The funeral took place at Otaki to-day, being conducted by the Rev. W. G. Slade, M.A.
Private Harold Jepson, who returned to New Zealand by the Briton, has arrived home at Waihoanga. His many friends will be glad to know that ho is now fit and well, though he has had a most trying time. He will probably, settle down at Waihoanga. •
The engagement is announced of Miss Elsie McLcavey, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Alf. McLeavey, of Ohau, and Mr Victor J. Cottle, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. B. Cottle, of Tc Horo.
Private Gordon Freeman (son of Mr and Mrs H. Freeman, of Otaki) and Private "Wally" Gooding (son of Mr C. Gooding, Otaki) returned by the troopship Buapehu, and arc now in Otaki. Private Freeman had a very 'bad rim while in the Old Country, baring two long spells in hospital. • He is now in good health, we are glad to say.News has reached Miss Wethey, of Otaki, that her nephew, Howard Wethey, the son of Mr and Mrs Harry Wethey, distinguished himself in the Mediterranean when they were taking over the Austrian fleet. An Italian honour was given him, and on the 17th May, at an investiture by the King at Buckingham Palace, the honour of the Order of the British Empire was con- j f erred on him. He is now a staff pay- j master lieutenant-commander in the , Boyal Navy. His only brother, God- | frey, joined the Army in 1914, and has j been mercifully preserved through all J the intense lighting in Flanders and France as an Artillery officer, though I frequently in hospital. He was twice I gassed, twice had fever, was wounded several times, and had a kick on the Check from a mule—a very painful injury. The latest news of him is that he is engaged to a nice young lady of , Lincolnshire, and is thinking of taking I holy orders. !}
