BETTER ROADS.

CONFERENCE TO BB HELD. The Mayor of Wellington has sent out invitations for representatives of all local bodies between Wellington and Palmerston North on the west coast, and Wellington and Mastcrtou on the east, to attend a conference to be held in the Council Chamber on Thursday next to seriously consider the question of the improvement of the main arterial ■roads out of Wellington, which are said to be in a very bad way at present. Consequent upon the railway "cut," motor traffic over the main roads has been enormously increased during the past three weeks, and its effect on the roads during this, the wettest season of of tho year, has been very marked. This '.'.ear is due to motor traffic —to heavy motor lorry traffic particularly — and the difficulty is to devise some sound scheme which will place tho burden on the shoulders of the right people instead of on those of the public generally. That is ;i matter that will be considered at the conference, which materially concerns tho country districts.
