FARMERS AND LABOUR.

» —_ A FARMERS* MANIFESTO. ■ In our last issue, in our report, of a [ meeting of .the Otaki branch of the Farmers' Union, we .reported .that Mr j E. Macdonald (president of the Tc j Horo branch) read a paper which the | I meeting decided should be adopted as : a remit from the branch. The remit iread as under: — "Short Manifesto to Labour. "That we. as a body of farmers dej siring what is just and reasonable, offer greeting and sympathy to that large body of labour whose aims arc j just and reasonable. We believe it is a special need of these times that all corporate bodies should by their endeavours prove a consciousness of brotherhood beyond its own nieniberi ship, in the interests of common weal, and not confine themselves to selfish aims irrespective of the effect upon others "\Ve even urge that none should grudge to fence sacrifices that -tire wrung form us in War, We urge that there is a "wise man's burden" (that the noblest among men have always ■ carrie 1, and often fallen under'), and that ail who ere enlightened should lightc. that bjrden by such help and encouragement as they can give on the highways of justice and reason, and in the 'ii,crests of true unity and peace and n smooth progress. For our part we would murk the occasion of the close of the great war by a promise and an endeavour to lill a new and better relationship .with our fellow-men, in accor I with the above, and with that view WO shall at all times encourage a friendly i-v-'",nge of opinion with Labour (of which we indeed may even claim to bo n part), trusting that patience and &ood sense will overcome any diuicuitifts that may arise, and that tire very function of 'union' in this direction will bring all toward a loiter unity and brotherhood than past conditions have afforded."
