EVENING WITH R.L.S.

Tho fortnightly meeting of the Otaki Literary and Debating,.Club, on Monday night last, was devoted to Robert Louis Stevenson. There was a good attendance, and the Kcv. W. G. Slade, M.A. (vice-president), who occupied th« chair, in introducing the subject for the evening, made some interesting remarks, referring to Stevensou's x'rincipal works and his porsonal charm. Mr Slade also read several brief extracts from R.L.S. 's works.

An excellent essay, by Mrs H. Larkiu, was read, dealing with the life and works of Robert Louis Stevenson. A capital programme of various items J from Stevenson's works was also rendered, and much enjoyed. Mrs P. B. Anderson read several extracts showing Stevenson's .great attachment for his old nurse ("Cuiuniy"); Miss McCleland read the famous poem, "The House Beautiful," while Mr A. R. Rudkiu read one of Stevenson's beautiful essays, entitled "El Dorado." Mr Byron Brown read some choice poems, "The Unseen Playmate" and "My Shadow," and also recited a very beau- . til'ul piece entitled "Christmas at Sea." ilr Frank Penn read two or thrco small -extracts, while Misses Carol Swabey and ('.wen Stevens sang three nice little songs from Stevenson's "Garden of Verses." Altogether a very pleasant and interesting, evening was spent. ,
