“OVER THE TOP.”
RETURNED SOLDIER’S DIVE. “Over the top? Haven’t I been over the top?” thundered a returned soldier at the height of an argument with a civilian on Victoria Bridge at Brisbane recently. “And I’ll go over again any day.”.hc declared. . “Bet you two bob you’re not game to go in over there.” said the other party, pointing to the parapet of the bridge. “You’re on,” answered the digger, and without a moment’s hestitatioii he mounted the ironwork, and dived headlong into the stream, clothes and all. He struck the water with his arms'extended, and disappeared from view. Rising to the surface he floundered about aimlessly for a time, and then coolly struck out for the shore. Assistance was soon forthcoming from a near-by fisherman, whose attention had been attracted bv the party •n the bridge, and the khaki-clad boy was rowed to the Y.M.C.A. hut on the river bank. Except "for a small cut on the head, the soldier was apparently none the worse for his escapade. “I’m all right,” he said. “Anyone got a cigarette?” The ambulance attended to the cut on his head, and afterwards took him to the Gen oval Hospital.
