DRYING OFF A COW.
Improper'care in drying off a milch cow is responsible for many udder troubles. The majority of cows usually. require no special treatment -to bring about the necessary rjeriod of rest during the six to eight weeks before the birth of the calf. It is the heaviest milkers those cows that will scarcely go dry from one lactation period to another—that arc the most susceptible to lost quarters and udder' troubles, and they must be milked dry very gradually. A good, deep-milking animal should be allowed a rest six weeks to three months before she calves again. For a medium milker two months is ample, blit three months is not too <loiig a period for a superior milker. Milk production is a. heavy drain on the system of tin; cow, and she necessarily must have a short time Ho recuperate if she is to be kept from falling, out through the overwork she is called upon to do.
