PICTURE DISPLAY. ' j PIKE BRIGADE BENEFIT. I The Otaki Fire Brigade, a voluntary organisation for the benefit of tin public, is making an endeavour to raisj funds to keep it afloat, and for tin: purpose is appealing to the public foi j support. It asks but little, tho modes! !, request being that all attend a first ! class picture display to be given in the (•Theatre on Friday night next, when ' good value will be given for money exU ponded. It is impossible for the brigade to carry on without support, and we trust residents will be to the fore and attend in numbers. Those unable to attend may help by purchasing tickets, which are being sold at Is 6d and Is (no war tax). "The picture to be shown, will be "Empty Pockets," a very fine drama, : while one of the best comedies, j "Charlie as Fireman," will be the j chief support.
I "Empty Pockets" is a fine feature. ' It is a screen version of the celebrated ; novel by Rupert Hughes and it is ■ doubtful if ever any picture has moved J off at such express speed and succeeded ■ in maintaining it to the very end. It j is also doubtful if such an unsolvablo mystery tangle hns ever before been • devised. The picture is a First National release, and the cast is air all- | star one, including Kotty Galanta, Bar■bara Castlcton, Bert Lytell,'and Maij colm Williams. Tho latter takes tho ' role of Perry Mcrither, a millionaire ' about town who has a special weakness for girls with copper-coloured hair. Ho is found murdered on the ..roof of a tenement house, and live women, all ( ' with red hair, are implicated because in the dead man's hand is found a knot of hair of that colour. Tho plot retains a remarkable clarity in spite of amazing complications and nil sorts of cross, currents which go to increase the mystification. The ending is very dramatic and unexpected. An exceedingly interesting love story rum; through the whole texture., and the picture is one of the most gripping we. have soon for some time.. The characterisation and setting arc perfectly done, and the contrasts between tho slum dwellers and the millionaire mansions is very effective. The film does full justice to Rupert Hughes' celebrated and daring j novel. i
