The Rev. G. P. Petrie leaves Otaki next week to attend the Synod, which shortly opens in Wellington.

Mr K. K. Bean, of the Wellington office, has taken temporary charge of the Levin Cost Office, pending the arrival of Mr Cork's successor, Mr Percy.

Miss Ncilson, a member of the volunteer sisterhood, who has had a very lengthy period of service in Egypt, is at present on a visit to Te Horo, the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Fielding.

"Mr C. K. Wilson, who sat for Tauinarunui dining the Parliament of 1912-14, has definitely decided to stand for the newly created Waitomo electorate when the appeal is made to the country.

On account of the withdrawal of Mr .1, Robertson, ex-member for Otaki, from the selection ballot, Mr M. Ayrton has been declared by the Labour Representation. Committee the official candidate for Labour in I'alnierston North at the next general election.

Mr H. Witchell, manager of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, who is enjoying IvrH annual leave, leaves on Monday next for Roforua and Auckland. Seeing that it is four years since Mr Witchell had a holiday, his trip is well deserved. Mr Shaw, of Wellington, is relieving at the Otaki bank.

The death is announced from Wellington id' Air Hamilton Gilmer, well known in business circles in that city. Born at Broomileld in the sixties, he was at Gabriel's Gaily, Otiigo. He had large brewery and hotel interests and was a member of the Legislative Council from 11)07 to Jit! 1. His sons were Drs. H. Gilmer and Knox Gilmer, both of Wellington, and Mr Samuel Gilmer, who served in Mesopotamia and Ls now ki England.

Mr and Mrs O. L. Harfmann, of Auckland (for many years highly esteemed residents of Otaki). leave by the steamship Rimutaka on duly 6th tor the- Old Country. Mrs Hartmann has been very unwell for some time past, and has been recommended by her medical advisers to take a long sea voyage, hence the trip Home. Her many friends will trust that, the voyage may have the desired effect. Mr and Mrs Harfmnen expect to be away from New Zealand for nine months, Mr Hartmann having secured leave for that period.

Mr and Mrs 0. P. Catley and family expect to move to their new home, Arapaepae Toad, Levin, next week. Mr Catley has been a resident of Te Horo for upwards of thirty-one years. When he first wcrit to the district it was practically all bush, and Mr Catley himself —u remarkably fine axeman, famed far and wide for his prowess' with the axe —was responsible for the felling o£ some 2001) acres of bush in Te Horo district. With Mr Catley's departure there will bo only lour of the old settlers left in Te Horo, viz.. Messrs Mickell, T. Taylor. Mounticr and H. Windlcv.
