LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.
—- ESSAY EVENING. There was again a splendid attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Otaki Literary and Debating Club, held at the Druids’ Hall on Monday night last, the Rev." G. F. Petr.ie, M.A., presiding. Three short essays were given. Mrs j Blathwayt. gave a most 1 interesting j essay on Charles Dickons, and illusj trated her subject by several extracts I .from his works, read by Rev. C. Calvert Blathwayt and the essayist. Mr | Pvron Brown’s essay on “AYork”- was | a particularly able effort, the reading jof which was much appreciated. Rev. Petrie, M.A., read an essay dealing j with the spending of the evenings in country towns such as Otaki. All these essays were discussed, that by the Rev. Petrie at considerable length, arid the evening was a most interesting and pro!:tabic one. t A r large number of new members were enrolled, and the success of the session is now assured. There is every indica- ! i ion of the membership being a record for the Club. j At next meeting a debate will- be ■ held on the question, “That war tends to develop a higher national character '• than peace does.” Mr A. R. Rudkin ' will lead off in the affirmative and Mr \ Thomas Collins, in the negative.
