OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB.

ANNUAL WINTER MEETING. A BECOKx) GATHERING. It was plainly evident by the large crowd present at the' opening day of the above club's meeting held yesterday, that the local race meeting is still gaining in popular favour. The crowd is estimated as an easy record .for the course. Visitors were . present from many parts. All trains—special and otherwise—-were crowded with a sporting throng, the fine weather and the holiday tempting many who were looking for a day's outing. The arrangements, thanks to the secretary (Mr O. J. D'Ath) and the stewards of the club, were complete. In his - secretarial duties Mr D'Ath was ably assisted by j Messrs M. 11. Ayre, A. A. Lnndall, and J. Griffiths, while Mr Southcy Fowler had the gate arrangements, and owing to his business ability everything went with a swing that did him credit. His able supervision was very highly commented upon. The course, which had previously been very hard, w r as, thanks to the recent rain, much improved, and the sting was taken out of it. There were no complaints in this direction, and all owners appeared well pleased with the going. The handicapping J gave satisfaction, most of the fields i were evently despatched, the racing t was good—several very close finishes resulting. In two races a small portion of the crowd was inclined to be hostile against the judge's decision, but lie had, however, the backing of the large majority.

Following are details of the racing

SECOND DAY, ' The light rain which fell last night has made the course somewhat sticky, and a trifle on the heavy side, but the rain was not sufficient to materially affect the course. A fine race resulted. : . but subsequently the officials of the , ; club met and disqualified the horse for . the race and fined the jockey £!>. t\ There were several small fines inflicted during the day. the chief offence the wearing, of wrong colours. . I There were no accidents to maT the ' t proceedings, and even in the Stec-pie- • ch»*o there was only one fall. Bail

Homo striking the first obstacle and dislodging Caddy without serious effect.

The gate takings proved easily a record, amounting to no less than £9-16 lis, as against £7OB 19s for the first day last June, an increase of over £237. The amount put through the totalisator was also a record, no less than £30,04(5 being put through the machine. Had the "pay out" arrangements been on a larger scale there is no doubt but that even more would have been invested.

Mr Gordon, stipendiary steward, was present at the mooting in his official capacity, but on the whole had an easy day. There was an absence of disorderly behaviour on the course yesterday, and the "limbs of the law" had a remarkably easy time. A well-known owner, for offensive language to an official, was yesterday fined £2. The favourites at the meeting failed to get home in many cases, and in consequence sonic of the dividends were good.
