STREET LIGHTING FOR OTAKI.

PRESSURE TO BE BROUGHT ON TOWN BOARD. The lack of street lights in Otaki was the subject of considerable discussion at the Otaki Literary and Debating

Club’s meeting on Monday night, the I matter being brought up by Mr A. E. I Anderson, who suggested that the Club Isend a deputation to the Town Boat'd, I} urging that street lights be provided on clulf meeting night's, as club members would not turn out on dark, dirty I nights such as that evening. Rev. Petrie thought it high timo that the Town Board did something in the way of providing street lights. He pointed out that the librarian had provided a light near the library gate,: which had been a great boon to many, and probably had saved many a nasty accident. The Town Board had not the excuse that it had years ago the cost of carbide—for the price was now only .about half what it was.

Mr Wesley Knight said the Town Board had provided no lights for years, and with the money saved they could well afford to provide decent lights. Mr Penn said undoubtedly the nonprovision of street, lights prejudicially affected the club’s meetings, in common with other gatherings, for people would not go out on dark, wintry nights in the dark streets. • Mr Norgrove thought that tho Churches were sufferers in this respect as much as anyone, and suggested a deputation from representatives of the club and the churches wait on the Town Board in the matter.

After some little further discussion, in which severe strictures were passed ou the Town Board for not doing something towards lighting the streets, it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Mr Norgrove, seconded by Mr Swabey, that the Rev. Petrie be appointed to represent this club, to confer with other societies and clubs and tho churches, with a view to sending a deputation to the Town Board to urge thqt street lights bo provided.
