HOCKEY.

The hockey -season- opened in Otaki on Wednesday, when, a friendly contest eventuated'between the Otaki and To Horo- teams. Both, sides comprised several new players,.and in consequence the ploy, was not of a high standard. Te Horo hads; the advantage in combination, and by some, very creditable play notched seven goals to one before'the game -ended. The .ganie, considering' all things,-was a fast one, and it redounds to the credit of the new players that they expressed- a' willingness to be taught. Once-they learn to keep their' positions" the game will become a real pleasure to them, especially as all are of the right stuff—it only remains fo'r the material to-be moulded. The Otaki' Club .members appeared in their, new—colours—black with wide yellow waistband—on /Wednesday. * '-■Unfortunately, as in past seasons, there is a dearth of referees, and we hope that-some' of the "old timers-' wili see their way to bassist. There are several', who are competent, and by re-' fereeing they help foster the game and mould 'the lives of our youth. A return match will be played cm Wednesday next between the Te Horo and Otaki Clubs. , '

The Otaki Club has, so, far, received generous monetary support, and thanks of members arc clue to'the donors. Mr Witchell has kindly given £2 lis, while Mr Byron Brown and Captain Bax have each donated half a-guinea.
