MANAKAU NOTES.
(From our own Correspondent.)
Last Thursday night’s welcome-home social to returned soldiers, though, hurried! v- arranged, was a very successful affair. The hall had been very nicely decorated, a committee getting to work at short notice, and sparing no pains in making effective and complete arrangements. Hr Los. Atkins, in the course of his remarks, apologised for the absence of a number of people, owing to various reasons, while Mr Howard Andrew stated that Mr P, Matheson (Mayor of Levin) would very much have liked to be present, but was detained at Levin by urgent business. Borne of those who had promised to assist, with musical items were also absent. Notwithstanding these unfortunate conditions, the function was a very great success in every way, and the*large number present spent a good time, while the returned boys were .riven a right royal welcome, and were made to feel that the Manakau people wore downright glad to have them back again safe and sound. During the evening Mr Howard Andrew, in addition to contributing a song, road a Dorsetshire poem, which was most appropriate. Mr and Mrs Aplin < parents of one of the returned men) being old Dorset residents. Mr Carter’s songs Were also enjoyed. The committee of management desire to return hearty thanks to Mrs Miles for so kindly coming forward and assisting with accompaniments. this lady being most obliging in this respect on all occasions.
