Harry Lauder, the Scottish comedian, has arrived at Sydney. He received a cable announcing that the King had conferred knighthood on him.
Private W. M. Barton, at one time land agent in Otaki, is making good progress after an illness contracted while en service.
Mr Albert Collier, of Hautere, is leaving for an extended holiday trip, through various parts »f the North Island.
Cabled advice has been received to the effect that Treoper Harold Jepson. who was recently reported as dangerously ill with pneumonia, is making satUfactory improvement. This will be good hcw* %o many friends of this soldier.
Mr Fred DuaUj who has been for some years in business as chemist at Ohakune, has been on u visit to Otaki. -.There he is well known (he is son of .Mr and Mrs A. S. Dunn, of Otaki). Mr Fred Dunn will probably embark in a new business venture in the near future.
I Mr B. W. MeVilly, previously Assist-ant-General Manager of Railway.-, takes over as from May Ist the duties of General Manager of Railways in place of Mr Hiley, whose engagement with the New Zealand Government has terminated. Mr Hiley, it is understood, will leave New Zealand for the Old Couatry by the Remuera ts. June sth nest.
The death occurred at Te Hoto on Vt'edncstlay last of Mr Joseph Freucrick Spiers, father of Messrs Spiers Bros., so wctl known throughout Te Horo and district. Mr Spiers, who was 72 years of age, lived for msny years at Karori, where he was held in the highest esteem, and he will be mourned by a great many relatives and a wide circle of close friends. The funeral will bo held to-morrow, the interment taking place at Karori cemetery.
Mr W. Siapsoa, late ef Otaki, was a candidate for the municipal elections at Woodvilie, where he has resided Einee leaving Otaki. Mr Simpson was elected, being fourth from the top of the poll. His many friends iE this district will be pleased to hear ox Ms election. Mr w" H. Field, SLP.j itas agreed to take part In the peace celebrations io be' held in 'this district, and flaring the time they are on will visit various part* of his electorate.
Mr Moses Ayrton, who recently resigned from the Methodist ministry, was tendered a social at Haleombe last week. On behalf of the Mr W. Fergusson presented Mr Ayrton with a cheque. Mas Ayrisa also received a send-off in the *hape of a kitchen tea, at the residence of Mrs Bonglas Anderson. Mr Ayrton Is mentioned as the prebable La»osr candidate at the next PalmSratoa ck-etien. He is a first-rate speaker, and has been in demand as a Labour advocate for some time past.
