Dr. H. Paterson, who has been absent at. the front for tho past two years, has returned to I’ahiatua. Privato Lionel Burston, son of Mrs J. W. Hodgson, of Otaki, is expected to arrive in Wellington by the Rstrnngi tomorrow morning. .SJr J. A. MvLcavoy has been reelected president of the Palmerston N. branch, of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union. At the University sports, Dunedin, Amos McKcgg, an cx-Otaki boy, wontho mile walk in Smin Gsee. -He represented tho Otago University. Gunner V. E. (“Vic.”) Morgan, who was with tho 37th Reinforcements, is due back in New Zealand by the Einuxtaka, duo on or about May 17th. Messrs Murdock and Spencer have been nominated for the Mayoralty of Shannon, while .thirteen candidates are contesting scats as councillors. Mr F. O. Smite, who shortly leaves for England, was entertained on Friday night by Levin Methodist friends, and presented wijh a lino pair of field glasses. ! The funeral of the late Mr Frctehling, the victim af a recent motor accident at Levin, took pla.ee on Saturday at Levin, and was largely attended. Deceased was tendered a MasOric funeral.
Among those due to return to New Zealand by the Northumberland on or about May 9th are Private A. H. Clifton (Rikiorangi), “Bert” Howell (l’draparauinu), and Lance-Corporal D. Witt-on (Ohau). i ITord has been received that FlightCaptain Phil. Fowler, of Feilding, late #£ tianjkau, has been appointed by the British Admiralty to an aerial torpedo sqnadrfn which was under aider* to proceed to Northern Russia.
Mjis Nancy Woolmer, of Otaki, had the .fcriafortune on Friday to have broken the small bone of her right wrist. -She was engaged in “cranking” a car, when it “kicked” anil struck her a Easty blow.
The Rev. W. G. Sladi, M.A., who will succeed the Rev. Hedley While in charge of the Otaki Methodist circuit, is expected to arrive in Otaki, together with his bride, on Friday next. Mr and Mrs Slade will t»e entertained at a w elcome social in Otaki on Friday weak.
The Rev. W. F. Grove, viear of Levin, leaves by the Athenic to-morrow fer England, for tho benefit of his health. He will be acesmEamed by Mrs Grove. Ke.v. J. Blackburne will fill the vacancy at Levin during tho vicar’s &b----»encc.
Private Ken. Taylor, son of Mr and Mrs G. W. Taylor, of Oiaki, who xetusned to New eZaland by .the lonic, reached home on Friday afternoon last. We are glad to say that Private Taylor is in excellent fettle. His brothers, Lieut. Walter Taylor and Gunner Win. Taylor, will probably be returning heme very shortly.
Nurse Lewis, so well and favourably known in this district, has at Last received her “marching ciders,” and on the 11th March was granted fourteen days ’ leave, after which she was ho sail for New Zealand. .Norse Lewis should therefore arrive in Otaki early in May. iThe work at the hospital had continued strenuous, and even the “little Nurse” admitted candidly that “she would like to go to lied fur a month.’' Many of the Otaki hoy a had recently visited her, and she had said farewell to numbers. She was glad to be leaving for New Zealand. Speaking of the weather Nurse Lewis said it had been very bad, and in their tin hut? the eold was intense.
