MEAT TRUST MENACE
PROBLEM IN GREAT BRITAIN. Producers in New Zealand will bo interested to read the following note from, the “Westminster. Gazette” of S2«d February last, on the working of. the Meat Trust: —“The explanations of the Food Controller about the transactions with the American Meat Trust would be absolutely convincing if we. had no knowedge of other facts The picture painted for us -is that of a Government Department squeezing . down prices and making good barj gains. Whence, then, came the onorm- •' ous protits—far beyond the most golden ‘ dreams of the packers before the war —that have been niadeYby the Trust.' j The simple fact is, and no amount of | official explanation will alter it, that in the dealings with the Government I Ihe Meat Trust always had the upper hand. It commanded supplies and held the Allied Government to ransom. That fact is fully set out in the report of an i investigation ordered by the President .of the .United States. Whf, then, ' should the Food Controller’s Department bo so anxious to conceal the • truth? ■ The Meat Trust remains at the | end of the war a bigger problem for the world to face than it was before the war.’’
