INFLUENZA
I . GOVERNMENT AND FUTURE ; ' EPIDEMICS. Speaking of the intention of tho Government regarding financing of an-' 'Other outbreak of influenza should one occur, the Minister for Public Health said that when the epidemic broke out last November it spread so rapidly that it was impossible to deal with it by ordinary means, consequently emergency hospitals were established and ths Government footed the bill. As far as could be ascertained, the expenditure was practically £20,000. If a recrudescence occurred, the hospital boards would bo required to accept this legal responsibility and to control tho entire • organisation in their respective districts. Also the Government would not in any future epidemic foot tho bill as on tho last occasion.
Referring to the fact that the Wellington Hospital Board had made provision in its esimales for Hie sum of £20,000 to deal with the epidemic, tho Minister said there was no necessity to take that course. The Act provided that in the ease of deficiency in the finances of the Board for the purpose of meeting expenditure for the year, the Board might make-a supplementary li vv on local bodies.
